England captain Rio Ferdinand will miss World Cup

England captain Rio Ferdinand will miss World CupCaptain of English national football team, Rio Ferdinand, is injured and will miss World Cup 2010.

Ferdinand suffered left knee injury on the first training of England team in South Africa. He was injured in the last minutes of training, in the duel with the Aston Villa striker Emile Heskeyjem, reports BBC Radio 5th

He was immediately taken to the hospital next to the English camp in Rustenberg to determine the seriousness of the injury and it appears that the defender damaged knee ligaments. Fears were confirmed after he left the hospital on crunches.

New captain of the England team at the FIFA World Cup will be Steven Gerrard.

Ferdinand’s place in the team will take Tottenham defender Michael Dawson, who had already been on "stand-by" in case of injury. Dawson is tonight flying to South Africa where he will again start to train with his teammates.

South Africa kicked off a month long party on Thursday night with a spectacular concert at Orlando Stadium, featuring the likes of the Black Eyed Peas and Shakira, as well a host of local talent.

South African President Jacob Zuma and FIFA President Sepp Blatter also joined in on the party in Johannesburg's Soweto township, calling for unity for the duration of the World Cup.
