Switzerland defender Philippe Senderos could miss out on the rest of the World Cup after suffering an ankle injury in his side’s historic 1-0 win over Spain today.

"Senderos has a sprained ankle and he may have ruptured a ligament or worse,” coach Ottmar Hitzfeld told Sky Sports.

“He has to go to the hospital to have some tests. It will be very difficult to replace him and it will be a major blow for my team if we were to lose him.”

Senderos, who has just signed for English Premier League team Fulham, left the field in the 35th minute after clashing with team-mate with Stephan Lichtsteiner.

South Africa kicked off a month long party on Thursday night with a spectacular concert at Orlando Stadium, featuring the likes of the Black Eyed Peas and Shakira, as well a host of local talent.

South African President Jacob Zuma and FIFA President Sepp Blatter also joined in on the party in Johannesburg's Soweto township, calling for unity for the duration of the World Cup.
