Nigeria striker Yakubu has vowed to make the Super Eagles’ doubters eat their words and help his country qualify from World Cup Group B.

“People were writing us off even before the tournament started, but I think we made some people eat their words,” he told Fifa.com.

“We gave as good as we got against one of the best teams in the world,” he said of his side’s 1-0 defeat to Argentina last weekend. “We have what it takes to reach the next round.”

The 27-year-old Everton striker went on to say that he was happy with his performance in the competition so far and that he would do everything in his power to make his country proud.

“As a striker you're always under pressure to score goals,” he said.

“You can play well and contribute, but if you don't put the ball in the net people will criticise you and say you're not doing the right things. I want to get goals more than anybody to make the people back home in Nigeria happy.”

Nigeria continue their World Cup campaign against Greece tomorrow afternoon.
